The Science

What mainstream research says about the ingredients of this phenomenon — the baseline every hypothesis must respect.

DMT and visual processing

N,N-DMT is a 5-HT2A receptor agonist. Peer-reviewed work (e.g., Timmermann et al., PNAS 2023, EEG-fMRI) shows it profoundly reorganizes cortical activity: increased signal diversity, disrupted predictive processing hierarchies, and vivid geometric imagery. Key concepts: visual cortex, receptive fields, predictive processing, cortical dynamics, geometric hallucinations (form constants).

Laser speckle

Coherent light carries waves in phase. Reflecting off or passing through anything with microscopic roughness, the waves interfere, producing speckle: granular, high-contrast patterns that differ with viewing angle and each observer's own eye optics. Through a diffraction grating, a laser casts a stable point lattice. Speckle is physically real — and it is also famously ambiguous material for perception: it seems to drift, flow, and organize as you look. Accommodation changes can make it appear to snap into structure.

Pareidolia and pattern completion

Human vision aggressively completes ambiguous input into meaningful forms — faces in clouds, words in noise. Under expectation ("you will see code") and a psychedelic state that amplifies pattern salience, writing-like organization of structured noise is exactly what ordinary cognitive science predicts.

Psychedelics and suggestibility

Research consistently shows enhanced suggestibility, expectancy effects, and sensitivity to setting under psychedelics. In this domain there's also inherent functional unblinding: participants almost always know what they took and what they're "supposed" to see. Demand characteristics are not a footnote here — they're a central design problem.

None of this proves the extraordinary claims false — it defines the bar any extraordinary claim must clear. See what that bar looks like.
